Mistaking a soft 404 for an indexing bug

Mistaking a soft 404 for an indexing bug

A page returns 200 OK but Google labels it "Soft 404" and won't index it — and people chase phantom crawl issues instead of the real cause: the page looks empty or error-like to Google even though the server says it's fine.

Common triggers:
— Thin pages with "no results found" / empty states still returning 200
— Content rendered client-side that fails for Googlebot
— Near-empty category or tag pages

What GSC does well:
— The Page Indexing report buckets soft 404s separately from real 404s
— URL Inspection's rendered HTML shows what Google actually saw

Where it falls short:
— It won't tell you why it judged the page thin

The fix: open the rendered HTML in URL Inspection. If the main content is missing, fix rendering or add real content. For genuinely empty pages, return a true 404/410 so they leave the report honestly.

Best for: diagnosing "200 but won't index."
Not for: anyone who only checks server status codes.
