Mistake: paying for a post but not the usage rights
Failure mode: a creator's video converts. You want to run it as a paid ad. You discover the contract only covered one organic post, so you re-negotiate from a weak position and pay 3x for rights you should have priced upfront.
Fix: rights are a line item on the rate card, decided before signing.
— Organic only: base rate
— Organic + 30-day whitelisting (run from their handle): +40%
— Organic + full usage (your ad accounts, 6 months): +80%
Decision rule: if the offer is performance-driven, always buy at least 90-day usage upfront. Re-licensing a proven winner always costs more than pre-licensing an unknown.
Checklist before signing:
— Usage scope named: organic, whitelisting, or full
— Duration in months stated
— Platforms listed (you cannot assume TikTok rights cover Meta)
— Renewal price locked now, not "to be discussed"
Definition of done: you can legally run their content as an ad the day it goes live, without a second email.
The winner you cannot scale is a winner you wasted.
