Inclusion domain lists vs deal-based curation: two roads to clean supply

Inclusion domain lists vs deal-based curation: two roads to clean supply

You want to buy only quality inventory. Two tools deliver it, and they fail differently.

1. Inclusion (allow) list: you specify the exact domains/apps you will bid on. Total control, but you only reach what you already know, and you maintain it by hand forever.

2. Deal-based curation: an SSP assembles inventory matching criteria (viewability, brand safety, audience) into a deal ID. You buy the deal and let the curator keep it fresh.

3. The tradeoff: allow lists never drift but go stale — new quality sites appear that you never add, shrinking reach over time. Curated deals stay fresh and scale but you cede the selection logic to a vendor whose incentives include their take rate.

4. A subtle failure of allow lists: with bundle ID and domain spoofing, an allow-listed domain can be faked in the bid request. The list protects intent, not authenticity — pair it with ads.txt/schain validation.

5. When to use which — allow lists for a small, known, brand-critical universe. Curation for scale where you cannot hand-maintain thousands of domains.

Why it matters: teams pick allow lists for control and slowly bleed reach as the open web evolves, never noticing because the list still spends. Audit list coverage against your category's available supply quarterly, or the control becomes a cage.
