Long-form vs short-form: comparing on monetizable value, not views
View-for-view, short-form pays a fraction of long-form, yet the comparison is incomplete without the funnel it feeds.
Context: long-form runs multiple mid-roll ads and supports memberships and deep sponsor integrations; short-form monetizes thinly but acquires audience cheaply.
Findings: dashboard data through 2024-2025 consistently shows long-form RPMs an order of magnitude above Shorts. But several creators report Shorts as a top-of-funnel feeder whose value shows up later in long-form watch time and subscriptions, not in its own RPM line.
Caveats: the funnel claim is largely correlational and self-reported; attributing a later subscription to an earlier short is methodologically fragile.
Implication: judging short-form by its direct RPM understates it; judging it by attributed downstream value overstates it. The honest answer sits between, and depends on how well shorts convert to your long-form.
What we still don't know: a clean estimate of short-to-long-form conversion, since platforms don't expose that attribution path.
