Owned newsletter vs on-platform monetization: comparing on durability

Owned newsletter vs on-platform monetization: comparing on durability

The core difference isn't this month's revenue — it's how much of it survives an algorithm change.

Context: platform monetization (ads, funds, tips) depends on continued reach you don't control; an email list is a direct channel you own.

Findings: synthesizing 2024-2025 creator-economy reports, newsletters typically monetize a much smaller audience at far higher revenue per subscriber, and show greater income stability across platform shocks. Open rates and direct sponsorship sustain even when social reach collapses.

Caveats: most comparisons are cross-sectional snapshots, not the same creator tracked through a deplatforming event; selection bias favors creators for whom newsletters already worked.

Implication: platforms maximize current reach-driven revenue; owned email maximizes resilience and revenue per person. They are complements, not substitutes — the data rarely supports going all-in on one.

What we still don't know: how email engagement decays over multi-year horizons for creator lists specifically, versus the well-studied marketing lists it's often compared to.
