I bought links before I had anything worth linking to
Month 2: read that links are everything, panicked, spent $600 on guest posts pointing at a 12-article site. Felt like a real SEO.
Month 5: rankings barely moved. The pages I'd linked to were thin — 900 words, no depth — so I'd poured authority into a leaky bucket. Worse, I'd anchored three links with exact-match text ('best protein powder') and started seeing those exact pages wobble, classic over-optimized anchor footprint.
The turn: I stopped buying links entirely and spent the next four months just making the content genuinely the best on the topic — comparison tables, real testing notes, updated pricing. Pages got fat and useful.
Then, month 10, I did outreach again — but now people linked to me unprompted because the content deserved it. Same $600 of effort, ten times the lift, because the foundation could hold the weight.
The takeaway: links amplify whatever's already there. Amplify a thin site and you amplify nothing. Build the asset first, get it ranking page 2 on its own merit, then add links to push it over the line. Order matters more than budget.
