The exact-match domain that boxed me into a corner
Month 1: bought BestRobotVacuums2021 dot com for $9. Felt clever — keyword right there in the URL. Built the whole site around robot vacuums.
Month 14: the site did $1,900/mo, decent. Then I wanted to expand into cordless vacuums, then air purifiers, then the whole smart-home category. But my domain literally said 'robot vacuums 2021'. The '2021' looked dated by then, and adding air purifier content to a robot-vacuum-branded site felt insane.
The setback: a broker valued it lower because the domain caps the exit story. 'Niche site, hard to scale beyond the name.' I lost maybe 8 months of compounding by being trapped.
The turn: I started a sister site on a brandable domain and slowly migrated my best-performing categories there with 301s. Painful, six months of redirect babysitting.
The takeaway: exact-match domains give you a tiny early ranking nudge that's gone within a year, and a branding ceiling that lasts forever. Buy a short brandable name you'd put on a podcast. Your future self, three categories deep, will thank you.
