One affiliate program nuked my income overnight
Month 8: my outdoor-gear site was 100% monetized through one program. $2,100/mo, all from them. I loved the dashboard, loved the 8% rate, never questioned it.
Then the email: rates dropping to 3% in 30 days, category-wide. My $2,100 became $790 in a month and I'd done nothing wrong. I'd just handed one company a kill switch on my business.
The scramble: I spent three frantic weeks signing up for direct brand programs and a second network. Discovered two brands I featured ran their own programs at 12% — double what I'd ever earned. I'd been leaving money on the table to stay in one comfortable dashboard.
Month 11: same traffic, three income sources, $2,400/mo and no single party could halve me again.
The takeaway: if one program is more than 40% of your revenue, you don't own a business, you're a tenant who can be evicted by email. Diversify before you're forced to. And check direct brand programs — the convenient network is often the lowest-paying option in the room.
