Internal search result pages: noindex them or turn them into landing pages?

Internal search result pages: noindex them or turn them into landing pages?

'Q: Should I block my internal site-search results, or can they rank?'

Short answer: noindex raw /search?q= results by default; promote only proven high-demand queries into real, curated category pages.

The longer version: Auto-generated search result pages are classic thin content — infinite, low-quality, and a Google penalty trigger from the 2007 'search within search' guidance onward. Block the dynamic ?q= pattern with noindex.

But the data is gold. Mine your internal search logs for high-volume queries with no matching category. If 2,000 people/month search 'waterproof hiking boots' and you have no such page, build a real static category for it — curated, with copy and a clean URL. That's not a search result; that's a landing page.

Example: noindex /search?q=waterproof+boots, but create indexable /waterproof-hiking-boots from the demand signal.

Rule of thumb: Block the machine-generated results, harvest the queries, hand-build the winners.
