Posting vs. commenting: building vs. borrowing audiences

Posting vs. commenting: building vs. borrowing audiences

The question: for a B2B founder with no audience, is the faster growth lever publishing original posts or commenting on others'?

The distinction is whose attention you're tapping. Posting builds your own audience but starts from zero distribution. Thoughtful commenting borrows someone else's already-assembled audience — a strong comment on a large creator's post can out-reach your own posts for months, and it puts you in front of exactly the people who follow that topic.

Three findings:
— Comment reach scales with the host post's reach, so one good comment on a big post beats ten posts into the void.
— Comments compound relationships; replies open DMs and warm intros that cold posting rarely does.
— But borrowed audiences don't follow you home unless your comment is genuinely additive — agreement adds nothing.

Caveat: comment-driven growth is hard to measure cleanly and easy to overstate; treat case studies as directional.

For B2B: when starting cold, invert the ratio — spend more minutes commenting than posting until you have a base, then flip it.

Bottom line: posting builds equity slowly; commenting borrows it instantly. Borrow first, build second.
