Failure mode: replacement that doesn't match intent
Mistake: dead URL was a free CSV template; you offer your blog post on "data hygiene." Topic-adjacent, intent-mismatched. Editor declines.
Fix framework — Intent Match Gate:
— 1. Pull the dead URL from Wayback, capture its H1, format, and primary intent (tool/data/guide/definition).
— 2. Classify your replacement on the same four axes.
— 3. Score match: format match + intent match = send; only one matches = build first, then send; neither = reject.
— 4. If format gap (they linked a tool, you have an article), note it as a content-build trigger.
— 5. QA gate: paste both H1s side by side before approving.
Automation fits at step 1 (Wayback API pull).
Definition of done: no pitch leaves the queue with an intent-axis mismatch.
