Q: My internal links all say "read more" and "click here." Does anchor text even matter for internal links?

Q: My internal links all say "read more" and "click here." Does anchor text even matter for internal links?

Short answer: yes, a lot — internal anchor text is one of the clearest relevance signals you control, and generic anchors waste it.

"Click here" tells search engines (and AI systems parsing your pages) nothing about what's on the other end. Descriptive anchors like "search intent for commercial queries" reinforce which entity and subtopic the target page owns.

In practice:
— Use the target page's core subtopic in the anchor, naturally, in a real sentence.
— Vary the anchor across links — don't paste the exact same phrase 40 times (that reads as templated).
— Avoid anchoring unrelated pages just to spread links; relevance beats volume.

The quick audit: read your anchors with the surrounding sentences stripped away. If you can't tell what each page is about, neither can a crawler.
