Ch. 3: Exact-match domain vs brandable, the $1,400 bet
When I started my sleep-mattress site in 2022, I almost bought BestMattressGuide.com for $1,400 on an auction. Exact keywords, looked authoritative. My gut said brandable was safer, so I registered Nesstop.com for $12 instead.
Three years on: zero penalty risk, and when I tried co-marketing with a bedding brand, they took 'Nesstop' seriously in a way they never would've a keyword-stuffed domain. The EMD I passed on? Still parked, never built. Whoever owns it gained nothing from the keywords — Google stopped rewarding EMDs around 2012.
But here's the honest part: an EMD does help click-through in SERPs for ultra-commercial terms. For a single-product affiliate page, I'd consider one. For a brand I wanted to sell later, never.
Lesson banked: EMDs buy a tiny CTR bump and zero ranking power. If you'll ever sell or partner, brandable is worth more at exit.
