When your brand name IS a keyword: the hidden exact-match leak

When your brand name IS a keyword: the hidden exact-match leak

A structural failure mode for exact-match-named brands. If your brand is "Cheap Flights Now," every branded anchor is simultaneously a commercial exact-match anchor. Practitioners log these as safe "branded" links and report a clean keyword ratio — while the link graph may read "cheap flights" the keyword.

On one hand, classifiers can use entity signals (the brand as a recognized entity in the Knowledge Graph) to disambiguate intent. On the other, a young domain with no established entity has no such signal, so its branded anchors are indistinguishable from keyword stuffing.

This is the under-discussed cost of exact-match domains: the anchor advantage everyone chased in the EMD era inverts into an anchor liability under distribution scrutiny.

The fix:
— For EMD-style brands, deliberately cultivate non-descriptive anchors: the bare domain, "the team at X," stylized variants
— Invest early in entity establishment (sameAs, consistent NAP, Wikidata presence) so the brand reads as an entity, not a phrase
— Don't self-classify these anchors as "branded" in audits; classify by surface form

Limitation: we can't verify whether Google's classifier resolves your brand to an entity at any given time.

Open question: at what threshold of entity confidence does an exact-match brand anchor get reclassified from commercial-keyword to navigational?
