A negative-SEO anchor attack that didn't land

A negative-SEO anchor attack that didn't land

The fear that a competitor can tank you by blasting toxic exact-match anchors deserves an evidence check. A 2022 case documented exactly such an attack — and its failure to do damage.

The targeted site suddenly gained ~4,000 links from low-quality domains, ~90% carrying a single spammy commercial anchor, over a few weeks. The site's exact-match ratio, on paper, spiked from ~15% to over 60% almost overnight.

The owner did not disavow, choosing to observe. Over the following four months, positions held steady — no measurable drop on 50 tracked terms.

The reading: the system appears to discount obviously manipulative, suddenly-appearing link bursts rather than counting them against the target. The 'paper ratio' diverged sharply from the apparent 'effective ratio' Google acted on.

On one hand, the stability through a 60%-on-paper spike strongly suggests heavy discounting of spam bursts — consistent with Google's repeated claims that negative SEO rarely works. On the other, n=1, and we can't rule out that disavowing would have been necessary had the attack persisted or come from better-quality domains.

Limitation: single case, short window, no comparison target.

Open question: where is the line between a spam burst that gets ignored and one that contaminates the effective ratio?
