Hashtags vs. in-text keywords: a dying lever vs. a rising one

Hashtags vs. in-text keywords: a dying lever vs. a rising one

The question: should B2B posts still optimize hashtags, or has LinkedIn search shifted the game to plain keywords?

The evidence points one direction. LinkedIn quietly deprecated hashtag-follow as a distribution mechanism, and its search increasingly indexes the actual words in your post, your headline, and your About section. Hashtags now function more like weak topic labels than reach multipliers.

Three distinctions:
— Three relevant hashtags do no harm and may aid categorization; ten stuffed tags read as spam to humans and add little algorithmically.
— In-text keywords (the literal phrases buyers search) increasingly drive whether your post surfaces in LinkedIn search and is retrieved by AI summaries.
— Hashtags are cosmetic; keyword-rich first lines do double duty as the hook and as search bait.

Caveat: LinkedIn rarely confirms ranking changes; this is inferred from observed behavior — directional.

For B2B: write the way your buyer would search ('vendor consolidation', 'RFP scoring'), keep one to three hashtags, and stop agonizing over tag strategy.

Bottom line: optimize the sentence, not the hashtag — search now reads what you actually wrote.
