Split one bloated sitemap into 5. Indexation of new pages 3x faster.
Client had a single 48,000-URL sitemap. New pages took 3-4 weeks to get indexed — lost in the pile.
What I did:
— Split into 5 sitemaps by type: products, categories, blog, fresh-last-30-days, everything-else
— Put the fresh sitemap first in the sitemap index, accurate lastmod dates
— Dropped dead/redirected/noindex URLs from all of them (sitemap was full of junk)
6 weeks: new pages in the fresh sitemap getting indexed in 4-6 days instead of 3-4 weeks. Overall valid-indexed ratio climbed from 71% to 89%.
Keep sitemaps clean — every 404 or noindex URL in there erodes Google's trust in the whole file.
