A single-page app with a 0% bounce rate (and a lie)
An analytics dashboard for a React tool showed a glorious 0% bounce and 7-minute sessions. Marketing was thrilled. The data was meaningless.
The app loaded once, then swapped views client-side. The old setup fired one pageview at load and nothing after, so every session looked engaged forever. The clue: time-on-page was identical to total session time on every record.
The change: we stopped relying on pageviews and instrumented route changes and key interactions as explicit events instead, with a real engagement signal tied to scroll and clicks.
Real bounce surfaced at 48%, and one onboarding step revealed a 38% drop-off nobody had ever seen.
In a single-page app, pageviews lie by default. Events are the only honest unit. The 0% was never good news, it was a sensor that wasn't plugged in.
