The 'best' landing page that was secretly the worst
A lead-gen company kept scaling spend to its top-performing landing page — the one with the highest tracked conversion rate, 11%. Sales kept saying the leads were thin. Nobody connected it.
The clue came from reconciling analytics conversions against the CRM: the page's form fired the conversion event on field focus, not on submit. A tagging mistake counted everyone who clicked into the form as a 'conversion.' Its real submit rate was 3%, below average.
They fixed the event to fire on successful submit only.
The page's reported rate dropped from 11% to 3%, budget shifted to genuinely better pages, and cost per real lead fell 26% in a month.
Lesson: reconcile your analytics conversions against the system that holds the money. A great rate built on the wrong event is a budget trap.
