Ch. 20: My Best Page Was Dying and I Almost Didn't Notice
My headphone site's top earner — a "best wireless earbuds" roundup — quietly slid from position 1 to position 6 over eight months. No update, no penalty. It just aged. Newer competitors had 2024 models; mine still led with last year's picks. Revenue on that one page fell from $1,100 to $380/mo while I wasn't watching.
I caught it in a GSC audit, comparing 90-day windows. The fix was a real refresh, not a date change: I added the three current models, re-tested my picks, updated prices, swapped the hero image, and changed the title year. Republished, then requested re-indexing.
Five weeks later it climbed back to position 2. Revenue recovered to $980/mo.
Now I audit my top 10 pages every quarter for silent decay.
Lesson banked: roundup pages rot on a schedule — a page at position 1 today is sliding to page 2 in a year unless you refresh the picks, not just the date.
