Reading a recovery: rank tools vs. impression tools
A short framing: when you're waiting to see if a core update recovery landed, the tool you watch shapes what you conclude.
🔗 [Rank trackers] — daily keyword positions; fast signal but noisy on small samples, and they miss queries you don't track.
🔗 [Search Console — Performance] — impressions move before clicks during a recovery; watch impressions by query group, not totals.
🔗 [Search Console — Page Indexing] — confirms whether a 'drop' was a ranking loss or a crawl/index issue masquerading as one.
The tradeoff: rank trackers tell you where on a known set; GSC tells you what Google actually served across everything, including the long tail you never added to a tracker. Recoveries almost always show up in GSC impressions first.
One to bookmark: GSC's compare-period view on impressions filtered to your top folder — earliest honest read on whether a recovery is real.
