Setting up smartlink rotation that doesn't lie to you
Myth: "Smartlinks auto-optimize, so just send traffic and trust the dashboard."
The chats love a smartlink because it removes work. It also removes visibility, and the network optimizes for its margin, not yours. Configure it so you can still see the truth:
— Split your traffic 80/20: 80% to the smartlink, 20% to 2-3 direct offers you picked manually as a control.
— Pass a sub ID for source, placement, and creative — if the smartlink strips these, that's your answer about who it serves.
— Pull payout-per-click by GEO weekly; smartlinks routinely downgrade your best GEO to a lower-paying advertiser once volume rises.
— Watch the redirect chain depth. Every hop adds latency and leak; over 3 hops on mobile bleeds conversions.
— Compare your 20% direct control to the smartlink EPC. If direct wins, the "optimization" was for them.
Reality: a smartlink is a black box that's optimizing somebody's revenue — set up the control split or you'll never know it isn't yours.
