Ch. 16: I Scaled With AI Content. The Update Found It.
I'll be honest — I got greedy. On my pet-supplies site I published 120 lightly-edited AI articles in two months to hit volume fast. It worked for a while: 33,000 sessions, $1,600/mo by month 5.
Then the helpful-content update hit and I lost 74% of traffic in two weeks. Down to 8,500 sessions. The AI bulk had tanked the entire domain's quality signal, dragging down even my 20 genuinely good pages.
Recovery took five months and was painful: I deleted 80 of the AI posts outright, fully rewrote 30 with real product testing and original photos, and let the domain breathe. No new content for eight weeks.
It clawed back to 19,000 sessions and $1,100/mo. Less than peak, but durable this time.
Lesson banked: bulk thin content doesn't fail one page at a time — it poisons the whole domain, and the cleanup costs more than doing it right would have.
