Case study: a price-tracking API turned a stale "best price" page into a money page

Case study: a price-tracking API turned a stale "best price" page into a money page

A tech review site's "current best price" widget was hand-updated weekly, so it was wrong most of the time. Readers caught stale prices, trust dropped, bounce climbed.

They wired a price-tracking API (Prisync-style competitor feed) to refresh 1,200 products every 6 hours and show a "price as of" timestamp.

What changed:
— Bounce on the page dropped from 71% to 58%
— Affiliate clicks +27% — accurate live prices restored buyer trust
— The visible timestamp itself raised perceived credibility (tested with/without: with-timestamp converted 11% better)

Gotcha nobody mentions: showing a price you scrape can violate some merchant terms, and one retailer asked them to add "prices may vary" or stop. They added the disclaimer line and kept it.

My pick: any reliable repricing/tracking API beats manual updates the moment you pass ~200 products.

Bottom line: a live price + an honest timestamp lifted clicks 27% — but add the "may vary" disclaimer before a merchant makes you.
