Why does a birthday email work so well?
A birthday email is an automatic note (often with a small treat) sent on a subscriber's special day. It feels personal because, for once, it's about them.
Why it matters: a coffee brand collected birthdays at signup but never used them. A whole field of goodwill sat unused.
Here's the setup:
— Step 1: turned on a one-time automation that fires on each person's birthday
— Step 2: ✅ included a simple "happy birthday, here's 15% off this week"
— Step 3: tracked redemptions over a full year
Result: birthday emails had a 48% open rate (more than double their usual) and one of their highest sales-per-email of any message.
Tiny homework: check if you collect birthdays at signup. Just look.
