Q: 'A blog post outranks our category page for a buying term. Should I fix it?'

Q: 'A blog post outranks our category page for a buying term. Should I fix it?'

Short answer: Yes — point the post at the category, and the right page usually takes over.

The longer version: A coffee retailer had a guide, 'Best Espresso Machines for Beginners', outranking their actual /espresso-machines category for that commercial query. Trouble: the blog post sent buyers to a wall of text, not products, hurting conversions. They added a prominent link from the post to the category with the exact anchor, embedded a product grid in the post, and beefed up the category page with a short buying guide on top. Within six weeks, the category page overtook the blog for the buying term, and conversions from that query rose 52% because clicks now landed on a page built to sell.

Rule of thumb: Match page type to intent. Buying queries should land on category/product pages — use internal links to hand the ranking over.
