The sale that sold out before it started
Three days before Black Friday, an online electronics retailer noticed something in its listening feed: shoppers were already posting "waiting for [retailer]'s deal on [product]" — 3,400 mentions naming one specific laptop.
The planned promo had that laptop at modest stock. The demand signal said the allocation was about to be a catastrophe of "sold out" complaints.
The buying team scrambled, tripled the inventory on that one model, and quietly reordered the homepage to feature it. They let the social anticipation build instead of fighting it.
On the day, that single product drove 31% of total revenue. Post-sale "couldn't get it" complaints were near zero, and sentiment closed the weekend at a record 79% positive.
The takeaway: pre-purchase chatter is a demand forecast nobody asked your customers to fill out. Read it, and your inventory stops guessing.
