Frequency capping is one of the most underused levers in programmatic, and overspending on overexposed users is one of the most common budget leaks.

The research on diminishing returns is consistent: most display ad categories see performance drop significantly after 5-7 impressions per user per week. Beyond that point, you're burning budget on users who have already seen your ad enough times to either act or tune out.

But frequency capping in programmatic is more complicated than it sounds. Cross-device, cross-SSP campaigns have no unified frequency counter. A user can receive 15 impressions from your campaign this week across different devices and SSPs while each individual capping rule thinks they've only seen 3.

Practical fixes:
- Use identity-based frequency capping if your DSP supports it (requires ID graph integration)
- Run separate line items for desktop and mobile with separate caps rather than blending
- Monitor reach vs. frequency metrics weekly — if average frequency climbs above 8-10 on a display campaign, you're in overspend territory
- Rotate creatives even within the cap window to reduce creative fatigue effects
