Category page SEO is the highest-leverage work in e-commerce.
Category pages aggregate the ranking signals of all the product pages beneath them. They target higher-volume, more competitive terms. And they typically have the strongest internal link profiles on the site.
Most stores leave category pages as thin filter interfaces with no content. That's a mistake.
What a well-optimized category page needs:
- 150-300 words of unique content above or below the product grid
- Keyword-rich H1 that matches search intent ("Men's Running Shoes" not "Men > Footwear > Running")
- Descriptive meta title and description
- Clear subcategory structure with internal links
- Canonical tags to handle sorting and filtering parameters
The content doesn't have to be sales copy. It can be practical — size guides, material comparisons, buying considerations. Something that gives Google context about what the category contains.
