Out-of-stock product pages need a clear SEO strategy, not a 404.
When a product goes out of stock temporarily, keep the page live with the product marked unavailable. The page has backlinks, ranking history, and crawl signals. A 404 throws all of that away.
For permanently discontinued products:
- 301 redirect to the most relevant replacement product or category
- If there's no good replacement, keep the page with a message and links to similar items
- Never redirect to the homepage — it's the least relevant destination and Google will eventually demote the redirect
For temporarily unavailable products:
- Update the availability in schema markup
- Add an email notification signup to capture demand
- Link to similar in-stock products from the page
Stores that 404 every out-of-stock product lose ranking signals for their highest-performing pages every time inventory runs out.
