'I actually went there': a travel publisher's first-hand-proof test

'I actually went there': a travel publisher's first-hand-proof test

The question: in travel — a non-YMYL but experience-heavy vertical — does provable first-hand visitation correlate with ranking after the experience-focused updates?

A documented test: a travel site rebuilt ~120 destination guides with proof of visitation — geotagged original photos, dated boarding passes or receipts referenced in copy, and specific sensory detail no desk-researcher would have. A matched control of ~120 guides got copy improvements but stayed desk-researched. Reported result over two core updates: first-hand guides gained an average of 3.7 positions; desk-research guides gained 1.1.

This is the cleanest expression of the 2022 'Experience' addition — Google's own examples for the extra E lean heavily on having actually done or visited the thing.

Counter-evidence: real visitation produces genuinely richer, more specific copy, so the ranking effect may flow from content quality and user satisfaction rather than from any 'experience detection.'

Caveat: Google almost certainly cannot verify a boarding pass. What it can reward is the specificity that real experience produces — which means the proof artifacts matter for *raters*, while the *specificity* matters for users and systems.

What we still don't know: how much of EEAT's Experience is detectable signal versus an instruction to humans that indirectly shapes what content wins.
