Site architecture is the foundation that determines whether your internal link equity reaches the pages that need it.
The principle is straightforward: pages closer to the root (fewer clicks from homepage) receive more link equity than pages buried deep in the structure. A page requiring 5+ clicks to reach from the homepage is, in practice, a low-priority page from Google's perspective.
For affiliate sites with large content catalogs, flat architecture is the goal:
- Homepage → Category → Article (3 clicks max for core content)
- Avoid orphan pages — every content page should be reachable through at least one internal link from a crawled page
- Hub pages (topic clusters) consolidate authority and distribute it to supporting content
Architecture audit starting point: export all crawled URLs from a crawler and look at crawl depth distribution. Pages at depth 4+ should either be promoted (via internal linking from shallower pages) or evaluated for consolidation.
Your best content at the deepest crawl depth is your biggest missed opportunity.
