An e-commerce checkout plastered Norton, McAfee, and SSL badges across every page. They removed them from product pages and showed a single badge only at the payment step.
— Checkout completion rose 11%
Why it spread: "trust signals = more trust," applied with a shotgun.
The boring truth: a security badge on a product page introduces a fear nobody had yet. You're whispering "worried about getting hacked?" while they're just looking at sneakers. Reassurance only helps where the anxiety actually lives - the moment a card number gets typed.
The nuance the trust-badge advice skipped: context-timing beats coverage. Show proof at the moment of doubt, not as ambient wallpaper that manufactures doubt earlier in the funnel.
