One billing dispute deleted their backups and their site together
Freelancer kept everything — site AND backups — in the same cloud account, same payment card. Card expired, auto-renew failed, dunning emails went to a dead inbox. Provider suspended, then purged the account after 30 days. Live data and backups vanished in the same delete.
Lost a 5-year portfolio site. Recovered ~40% from Wayback over a month.
If your backup dies when your main account dies, it was never a backup. Separate account, separate vendor. Fight me in the comments.
