Pages in hreflang clusters that were also noindexed
Hypothesis: noindexed pages referenced inside hreflang clusters were poisoning the cluster, causing Google to distrust the whole annotation set. Methodology: forensic + remediation. One site, ~5,000 URLs, where a staging-leftover rule had applied noindex to ~600 localized pages still present in their hreflang clusters. 9-week recovery window.
Findings:
— The contradiction is fundamental: hreflang says 'index this as the variant for locale X,' noindex says 'don't index this.' Google followed noindex and the cluster lost a member.
— In affected clusters, the remaining (indexable) variants showed 'no return tags' errors because the noindexed page couldn't return the reference cleanly. So 600 bad pages generated errors across ~2,400 pages.
— We either removed the noindex (where the page should rank) or removed the page from the cluster (where it shouldn't). Errors fell from ~2,400 to ~120.
— Affected markets' correct-country serving recovered ~21 points.
Caveats: we did two different remediations on different subsets, so the recovery is a blend; we didn't isolate which remediation drove more of the gain. n=1 site.
Conclusion: every URL in a hreflang cluster must be indexable and self-canonical. A noindexed member doesn't just remove itself — it generates return-tag errors that ripple across the cluster. Audit for this specifically; it hides well.
