260,000 backlinks, a 64% "toxic" verdict, and a recovery that needed none of it
The myth: a high toxic percentage means urgent cleanup.
An ecommerce site dropped after a core update. A vendor audit showed 64% of 260,000 links "toxic" and pitched a cleanup package. The in-house lead paused and segmented the traffic loss by URL instead.
Result: 90% of the lost clicks came from 40 product-category pages with thin, duplicated descriptions — none of which had unusual link profiles. They rewrote those 40 pages. Traffic returned in two core-update cycles. Disavow file: never uploaded.
Actually, the link audit was a distraction priced like a solution. The problem was on-page the whole time.
Reality check: when 64% of your links are "toxic" but your losers are thin pages, the toxin is your content.
