Loops are the most underutilized retention tactic in short-form video — and they're built into the platform mechanics on every major app.
A loop is when a viewer watches your video, it ends, and it automatically starts again. On TikTok, this counts as an additional view. On all platforms, it signals high engagement to the algorithm.
Content that loops well has these characteristics:
1. The ending connects naturally to the beginning (so the restart doesn't feel jarring)
2. The ending doesn't feel definitively "over" — no hard sign-off, no fade to black
3. There's something in the content that rewards a second watch (a detail in the background, a line that lands differently once you know the ending)
For short-form creators: the simplest loop-optimized ending is one that poses a question the viewer might have missed the first time, or a visual that looks different once you know the context. The viewer watches again to catch what they missed.
Measurement: if your average view duration as a percentage significantly exceeds 100%, you have loop-watching happening. 130% average completion means the average viewer is rewatching part of the video. That's an exceptionally strong signal of content quality and platform distribution reward.
