Portfolio management: how many domains to hold and what the carrying cost math looks like.

Portfolio management: how many domains to hold and what the carrying cost math looks like.

One of the common mistakes in domain flipping is accumulating a large portfolio before developing a reliable exit strategy.

Carrying cost reality check:
- Registration renewal: $10-$15/year per .com domain
- Marketplace listing fees: $5-$20/year per domain on premium marketplaces
- Time cost of managing inquiries and renewals

For a portfolio of 100 domains: $1,500-$3,500/year in cash carrying costs before counting your time.

The math only works if your average sale price exceeds your average purchase price by enough to cover holding costs on the unsold inventory.

Rule of thumb: if a domain hasn't sold within 2-3 years, it's probably not worth renewing unless you have strong conviction about a specific upcoming buyer event (IPO in the industry, trend emerging).

Most successful domain flippers run portfolios of 20-60 domains — small enough to manage actively, large enough to generate regular sales.
