The niche selection mistake that kills authority sites before they start.
Most people choose niches based on passion or perceived monetization potential. Neither of these is the right primary filter.
The right filter: can you realistically demonstrate E-E-A-T in this niche?
E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness) is Google's framework for evaluating content quality in YMYL (health, finance, legal, safety) niches — and it increasingly applies to all competitive niches.
A site about personal finance written by anonymous authors with no credentials struggles against a site where the authors have verified professional backgrounds, are cited in publications, and have LinkedIn profiles matching their claimed expertise.
Practical niche selection criteria:
1. You have genuine expertise or access to experts in this niche
2. You can document your credentials and experience publicly
3. The monetization model is viable (affiliate programs exist, advertisers spend here)
4. The search volume is sufficient but not dominated by billion-dollar brands on every query
Niches where you can credibly demonstrate experience and expertise are the only niches worth building long-term authority in.
