Does authority in one silo bleed into a new, unrelated silo? A clean test

Does authority in one silo bleed into a new, unrelated silo? A clean test

Question: when a site is strong in topic A, does launching topic B inherit any advantage — or start from zero?

What was done: a site with established authority in topic A (personal finance) launched a genuinely unrelated silo, topic B (home gardening), with 25 articles. I compared their entry rankings against a brand-new domain publishing 25 equivalent gardening articles in the same window.

Outcome: the established site's gardening articles entered at an average position of 19; the fresh domain's at 27 — an ~8-position head start. But within the finance site, comparable new finance articles entered at position 12. So topical authority transferred partially across silos (better than a new domain) but far from fully (much weaker than in-topic).

Caveat: the established domain also had aggregate links and age the new domain lacked, so "cross-silo topical transfer" is bundled with generic domain strength. The three-way comparison helps but doesn't fully separate them.

Method note: three cohorts (in-topic, cross-topic, new domain), 25 articles each, entry-position comparison.

Confidence: low-to-medium — informative structure, confounded by domain-level factors.
