Ch. 12: I Didn't Rank Higher. I Just Got 31% More Clicks.
My mattress-comparison site was stuck at position 4-6 for a cluster of high-volume queries. Moving up was a backlink war I couldn't win against the big review sites.
So I stopped chasing position and optimized the click instead. I rewrote 18 title tags to lead with the actual answer or a number ("7 Mattresses Under $800, Tested 90 Nights"), added FAQ schema to surface in results, and put the price/verdict in the meta description instead of fluff.
Positions barely moved — average stayed around 4.5. But CTR on those 18 pages went from 4.1% to 5.4%, a 31% relative lift. Same rankings, 31% more visitors.
That translated to roughly $600/mo extra with zero new content or links.
Lesson banked: when you can't climb the ranking, you can still win the click — title and snippet optimization is the cheapest traffic you'll ever buy.
