A channel that compared memberships to ad revenue directly

A channel that compared memberships to ad revenue directly

Context: an education-focused YouTuber (about 140,000 subscribers) published a year comparing channel memberships against ad revenue on the same channel.

Findings (self-reported, annual):
— Ad revenue: about $28,000 from roughly 7M annual views
— Memberships: about $19,000 from 480 active members at $4.99/month
— Memberships delivered 40% of ad revenue from a fraction of a percent of the audience

What was done: the creator gated a monthly live Q&A and a resource library behind membership, keeping all core videos free.

Caveats: single channel in a high-affinity niche where members feel a personal relationship — that affinity doesn't transfer to, say, viral entertainment. Membership revenue is reported after YouTube's 30% cut; ad revenue after the 45% cut, so the comparison mixes net figures inconsistently. Member churn over the year was not disclosed.

Implications: supports the recurring finding that a tiny super-fan fraction can rival broad ad monetization — the classic '1,000 true fans' dynamic, measured.

What we still don't know: membership churn, without which the $19,000 cannot be projected forward.
