Switching support from text to forum channels: a structure test

Switching support from text to forum channels: a structure test

When Discord shipped forum channels, a 2025 case study followed a 20,000-member developer community that migrated its #help text channel to a forum format (each question its own thread), measuring eight weeks before and after.

What the data shows
— Questions receiving at least one answer rose from 67% to 84%.
— Median answers-per-question rose, as threads stayed visible instead of scrolling away.
— But new-question rate dipped ~9% — some friction in opening a thread versus firing a message.

Why it happens
In a flowing text channel, an unanswered question vanishes in minutes; the forum format gives each one persistence and a title, so helpers can browse unanswered items deliberately. This mirrors why Telegram's lack of native threading caps its viability for structured support — the medium shapes the answer rate.

The caveat
The 9% drop in questions is a real cost: thread-creation friction deters casual askers, and some of the 'answered-rate' gain is simply because fewer, more-committed people asked. Eight weeks won't reveal whether the forum accumulates a searchable knowledge base (the long-term prize) or just a graveyard of stale threads.

Open question: does structured threading raise answer quality, or mostly select for the patient askers who'd have gotten answered anyway?
