Q: Our cart and main site looked like two unrelated visits — how did cross-domain fix attribution?
A: A brand on shop.example.com and www.example.com saw the cart domain attributed 90% to referral/example.com. The journey was split in half:
—
Admin → Data Streams → Configure tag settings → Configure your domains
—
Added both domains so the _gl linker parameter passes between them
—
Verified the URL carried _gl on the cross-domain click
Within two weeks self-referral attribution on the shop domain fell from 90% to under 5%, and original campaign sources finally got credit. Reported conversions per source became usable for the first time.
TL;DR: Without configured domains, GA4 treats your own subdomain as a referral. Add both domains and the _gl linker stitches the journey.
