Q: Can deleting pages actually improve rankings? That sounds backwards.

Q: Can deleting pages actually improve rankings? That sounds backwards.

Short answer: yes, when the deleted pages are thin and diluting your topical focus. An e-commerce blog had 320 posts, many 300-word thin pieces with no traffic and no relevance to their core niche.

They pruned 140 of them, redirecting the few with any links and removing the rest. No new content was added during the test.

Result in 10 weeks: sitewide organic clicks rose 23%, and the remaining core-topic pages gained an average of 4 positions.

In practice: a pile of thin off-topic pages weakens how clearly search engines understand what your site is the authority on. Cutting them sharpens the signal and frees crawl budget for pages that matter.
