Turning on the padlock recovered a reader's lost visitors
A reader watched visitors leave the instant they arrived. The reason: browsers showed a scary 'Not secure' warning on his site.
The fix is an SSL certificate, which switches your address from http to https and shows a little padlock. It encrypts the connection, like sealing a letter in an envelope instead of sending a postcard anyone can read.
His host offered a free one:
— He turned on the free SSL in his hosting panel.
— Installed a small helper plugin to update old http links.
— The padlock appeared in 15 minutes.
The 'Not secure' warning vanished, and his bounce rate fell noticeably as nervous visitors stopped fleeing.
In plain words: the padlock tells visitors your site is safe, and most hosts hand it out for free.
