Case #006: The page nobody read
A weight-loss offer, $44 per sale, was running direct-to-offer. $3,200 spent, $2,000 back, a 38% loss. The traffic was fine, the offer converted for other affiliates, so the leak was somewhere in my funnel.
The gap was the jump. Cold push traffic hit the merchant's sales page directly, and that page assumed the visitor already wanted to buy. The bounce rate was 79%. People clicked the ad out of curiosity and slammed straight into a checkout.
We built one thing: a prelander. A simple advertorial, a quiz of three questions ('What's your main goal?'), and a soft transition that warmed the click before handing it to the offer. It cost a day of work and $0 in ad spend.
The prelander changed the physics of the funnel:
— lander-to-offer click-through went from raw cold traffic to a self-qualified 31%
— cost per sale dropped from $70 to $33
— bounce on the merchant page fell because only warm clicks reached it
The rebuilt funnel over the next twelve days:
— $8,800 spent
— $14,700 revenue
— 67% ROI
Same traffic, same offer, same payout. We just stopped asking strangers to marry us on the first date.
The lesson: cold traffic doesn't convert on a checkout page — it converts on the page that earns the right to show one.
