Heard this week: a forced PHP upgrade that didn't riot
Word is a managed WordPress host finally pushed its fleet off an end-of-life PHP version — the move every platform dreads because it breaks somebody's ancient plugin. A source tells us they did it with a staged approach worth copying.
They ran compatibility scans on all 40,000 sites, auto-flagged the 3,100 with known-broken code, and gave only those owners a 60-day hand-held window. Everyone else was migrated silently overnight.
The outcome: fatal-error tickets after cutover numbered 210, not the thousands they'd braced for, and 98.5% of sites moved with zero owner action.
Unconfirmed, but the platform lead reportedly framed the scan list on their wall.
Watch this: scan-then-segment is how you do a fleet-wide upgrade without a revolt.
