The campaign that looked like a hit
A DTC mattress brand ran twelve influencers and the dashboard glowed: 2.1M impressions, 18,000 mentions, share of voice up 30%. The CMO was ready to double the budget.
But the listening analyst overlaid mention geography against the brand's actual sales map and found a mismatch. Sixty percent of the engagement came from regions where the brand didn't even ship — a fingerprint of bought, off-target reach.
Digging deeper, two of the twelve creators accounted for 80% of the suspicious mentions, with near-zero authentic replies and a sentiment score weirdly flat at exactly neutral.
The brand cut those two, reallocated to the four creators whose mentions actually clustered in shipping zones, and watched cost-per-real-mention drop 52% the next flight.
The takeaway: impressions and mentions can both be inflated. Cross-check where the noise lives against where your customers actually are.
