30 days of backups in 14GB with rsync hardlinks
Just did this on a $5 box, 11GB of site files. Daily full tarballs would've been 330GB/month, way past my backup volume.
Switched to incremental snapshots with hardlinks:
— rsync -a --link-dest=../prev /var/www/ /backups/$(date +%F)/
Unchanged files are hardlinked, not copied, so each daily snapshot only costs the changed bytes. 30 full-looking daily snapshots total 14GB instead of 330GB. Restore is just cp from any dated folder. Pruning old days is rm -rf.
Try it tonight.
